Here are are the latest 2 Mac vs PC ads (they’ll play back-to-back). There’s cute animation a la the 1964 Rudolph the Rednose Reindeer tv special, but I’m scratching my head as to why Apple would take such a departure from the standard Mac vs PC commercials by not touting ANY Mac benefits (not to be confused with features.)
The first video, “I Can Do Anything” has absolutely nothing to do with computers. It’s a commercial for the sake of making a Christmas commercial.
The second video, “Tree Trimmings,” is similarly lacking in value and relevence, but goes even further to end with christmas lights flashing the message “PC Rules!” WTF? When “PC” plugs in the Christmas lights and we see “PC Rules,’ what does apple expect us to think? “Oh, stupid PC, this is an APPLE commercial, put away your lights! Hm, I should go buy a Mac Book Pro.” Not happening. I’m a visual learner and the only thing with staying power in this ad is “PC Rules.”
I think Apple is wise not to cut the costs of their products and thus avoid devaluing them, but since cost is the #1 barrier to Mac-adoption, they need to convey VALUE in their marketing. It’s true that you won’t survive the recession if you stop marketing, but advertising with fluff just for the sake of advertising is wasteful and, well, just plain retarded.
I’m disappointed to say that in this video, anyway, PC Rules. Now I’m going to go wash my mouth out with soap.
