Me busy. You busy too. Rather than try to write some poetic write-up about this year’s Superbowl Ads, here are some down-and-dirty key takeaways and some of the best (and worst) videos…
Key Takeaways
- Ads cost $3 Million for 30 seconds / $100,000 a second
- The winner of the Superbowl ad-race is indubitably Cash4Gold. Wait, what?
- Ad Age has published an awesome chart (PDF) showing ad pricing and ratings since the first Superbowl in 1967
- Only 4 advertisers directly referenced the recession: Bud Light, Hyundai, ETrade and Cash4Gold
- The Winner? I have to split it between Hyundai and Cash4Gold
- Hyundai: On Jan 5th I wrote about their “if you get laid off within the first year of purchase then return your car” incentive, and this commercial focused on just that. Brilliant.
- Cash4Gold: A.) Do NOT send this company your money; I once worked for a medical devices company with a legit refining service, and I can tell you Cash4Gold will pay you about $.17 on the dollar for your gold. Total scam. B.) As Bob Garfield of Ad Age said, Cash4Gold will likely have the highest ROI of any advertiser. Ugh.
Disclaimer: my apology if any of these videos are slow-loading or give you issues… It seems that every video sharing site in the world is on the fritz; everyone and their mother is watching these videos right now… See? It’s your own fault!
The Best of the Best
Winner #1: Hyundai Assurance
Winner #2: Cash4Gold: I felt like I was watching early-morning TV…
Denny’s: Thugs
Bridgestone’s Potato Heads: Anything I would say would just get me in trouble; I know she’s reading this
Pepsi Max: “I’m good.” Ahhh, infantile humor still tickles me pink
NBC’s LMAO: I didn’t LMAO, but for a network commercial they did damn fine
Bud Light: Drinkability
Bridgestone: Astronauts get their tires stolen.
Cars.com: David Abernathy… pretty frickin cute and avoids being kitschy
Monster.com: Doubletake… I still think the concept behind these ads is AWFUL, but this one was at least a pleasure to watch
Cheetos: Spoiled girl
Hulu TV
The Worst of the Worst
GoDaddy: Enhanced… just as bad as the original
CareerBuilder: Like the 12 Days of Christmas but 1,000x more annoying
Coca-Cola: Avatar. I’ll give them 1/2 a point for creativity, but deduct 10 for stupidy… and this one’s a full minute long; $6 million for THIS!?
Sobe: Honestly, just don’t even watch this video. Skip to the next one.
Teleflora: Talking Flowers… mean and really stupid.
