Professional Confessional: Getting Organized

Lately I’ve been a little disorganized. No – that’s an understatement. I’ve been an utterly chaotic tornado of inefficiency.

Today I almost went to lunch instead of leading a 12:15 web demonstration. My task list in Salesforce.com is 98% red, meaning OVERDUE, some of them months old.

Conference Preview: Web 2.0 Expo

The theme of this year’s Web 2.0 Expo is doing more with less. I just did a mental double-take as I wrote that – I’m great at doing less with less, and maintaining the same with less is a challenge, but the proposition of doing more with less sounds like a lot of work, sets unreasonable expectations, and would in all likelihood end in failure/unemployment. I’ll try to remain optimistic, though!

The Professional Confessional: When is a sale lost?

Lately I’ve been hitting some snags in my sales cycle. Without a doubt, my strength lies in the early stages of the sale. As the Marketing Manager for the past two years, I’ve been crafting our messaging, so I know it inside and out and can generate interest very quickly and lock in meetings. However, I’m having trouble closing.

Marketing and Sales: Can’t we all just get along?

Please help me understand the thought process behind separating sales and marketing; in many cases the two departments literally undermine one another. I’ve just never understood why most teams don’t work side by side: it’s like driving around without knowing where you are going. The blind leading the blind. The right side of your brain not being connected to the left.

The Best Articles We’ve Read This Week: The March 6 Hitlist

Every Friday The Daily Anchor offers up the best articles we’ve read all week. Most are recent, some are old, but hopefully they’ll all be useful, interesting or entertaining. The list isn’t huge and it isn’t exhaustive, because if it were there’d be no chance you’d read them all.

Now is the Time for Optimism

Friends and family are losing their jobs. The stock market has tanked. Home values have deteriorated dramatically. The situation is dour, but an important step in the recovery process is for individuals to begin recognizing that recessions are part of the natural business cycle.

Recession Proof Industries: A Few Unexpected Industries That Are Up When the Economy is Down

A while back we wrote about how to find a job in a recession, and we recommended you look into industries that are expected to keep growing despite the downturn. Most of those industries were pretty obvious, though, so here’s a look at some unexpected industries that continue to rock through the recession.

The Professional Confessional: DIY or Die – Follow Up

Last week’s Pro/Con column had me left in the lurch by several colleagues and struggling to complete a lengthy RFP on my own. The shit continued to hit the fan, proving to be one of my largest f-ups to date, so I offer this follow-up.

My assessment that only self-reliance would equal success needs serious re-evaluation. I attempted to complete the RFP with just about a week remaining leading up to the due date…

The Professional Confessional: DIY or Die

I’m actually stunned to admit being guilty of this; usually I’m a pretty Do-it-Yourself (DIY) guy. In my current position, 99% of the time I take the position of “If you want something done right, you’ve got to Do It Yourself!” It’s that other 1% that really screwed me this time.

Best Craigslist Job Hunting Post Ever (Warning: vulgar)

Last week Ella Keeven offered insight into how to better position yourself in a job search by thinking of yourself as a product, but I’ve found another novel approach to job hunting… A colleague forwarded me the following Craigslist post, and while it’s wholly vulgar and wide outside the usual tenor of The Daily Anchor, I thought many of our readers would relate to this one man’s frustration.

When to Quit Your Day-Job to Focus on Your New Business

At what point should I leave my day-job to focus 100% on my new business? I’m being stretched thinner and thinner every day and find myself physically unable to give 110% to each of my responsibilities, and yet the prospect of leaving a stable, well-paying job in a recession is downright scary if not completely asinine. Then again, I think that a recession is actually the best time to start a new business.

If All This “how-to…” During A Recession Advice Worked, Then Why Don‘t I Have A Job?!

Just like many of you, I was laid off when the market tanked. I guess considering that I was in marketing for a real estate development company, I was asking for it. Now I am getting frustrated…grrrrr…I am a hard worker, awesome at what I do (did) and I want to get back to doing it. So why is no one responding to me?!?!

The Professional Confessional: Anatomy of a Sale

I’m happy to say, I closed my first new account of 2009! Since I’m in a good mood, I thought I’d mix it up a bit this week and analyze the pros and cons of the sales cycle for this win.

Some key stats:
-Relative value: 60% of my Monthly Quota
-Turnaround time from lead to close: 23 days (16 business days)
-Number of formal meetings: 1 online, 1 onsite

What Makes a Video Viral? The Consumer, not the Company

JustLuxe.com says: Diesel has launched a new viral ad campaign. The Daily Anchor says: No, no it didn’t. You can launch a campaign and it can go viral, but you cannot “launch a viral campaign.”

You can launch a campaign and it can go viral, but you cannot “launch a viral campaign.” A campaign doesn’t go viral until, well, until it goes viral.

The Professional Confessional: Talk to Your Team BEFORE Launching Email Campaigns

It all began, as most things do, with good intentions. I was browsing one of our channel partners’ websites where our applications are listed, and stumbled upon a page announcing “The Best Apps of 2008.” This was perfect! Not only would this engage our base, it would increase our viability and outreach to prospects as well. So I drafted my mass email, polite and humble, thanking our customers for
